5 - The Ontology in Data Lineage

📖 Task Introduction

Because object types are backed by Foundry datasets (and those datasets are the targets of scheduled pipelines), they can be represented in a Data Lineage graph. This can be a useful way of quickly understanding the provenance of and relationships among elements of your Ontology.

🔨 Task Instructions

  1. Click the back button in your browser to return to the Object View for the N101NN aircraft.

  2. Click the More ▾ button in the upper-right area of the screen and then on … Advanced and click the words Explore data lineage (i.e., not on the ) .

  3. When the Data Lineage graph renders, click the “link” icon at the top right of the [Example Data] Aircraft node (as shown below) to surface all of the linked object types in the Ontology. Arrange the graph as desired by clicking and dragging the nodes. Let’s further explore the links.

  4. Click on the [Example Data] Aircraft object. On the right-hand side of the screen, click on the Related Items icon () to expand the Link types sidebar.

  5. Click on the [Example Data] Aircraft ↔ [Example Data] Airline item to reveal the cardinality, visibility, and key pair of the relationship between these two object types.

    • These object types were able to be linked during the Ontology configuration process because their backing datasets share a key (though they might have distinct column names for this key).
  6. In the bottom left of the screen, click the Preview tab to reveal a list of objects of this type. Clicking on any of the individual items in the list will open its Object View in the Object Explorer.
