3 - Open the Dataset in Contour

This content is also available at learn.palantir.com ↗ and is presented here for accessibility purposes.

📖 Task Introduction

You'll begin your analysis by opening a dataset in Contour. Every time you create a new analysis, it is automatically saved with the title New Analysis (Date and Time of Creation) in a folder in your personal files called .auto_save.

It's a good habit to name your analyses and save them to an appropriate location (e.g., a project folder for analyses that should be shared with users who have access to that project).

Note: There are a few different ways to open a dataset in Contour. For example, besides the steps below, you can click directly on the dataset and select Analyze or Actions and then Analyze in Contour.

🔨 Task Instructions

  1. Search for and click on the **Foundry Training and Resources** Project and then click directly on the folder named **Example Data**
  2. Select **Aviation Ontology** folder.
  3. Click directly on the dataset name to open the **flights** dataset.
  4. Click on the Actions menu dropdown near the top right of the screen, and select Analyze in Contour.
  5. Rename your analysis by clicking on its default title (New Analysis (…)). Use the title {FIRSTNAME LASTNAME} US Flight Data Analysis, where {FIRSTNAME LASTNAME} is your full name to help locate your file later.

Note: Depending on your environment, you may be prompted with a sub window asking you to choose a folder to save your new analysis into; if you are, save your analysis in your /Tutorial Practice Artifacts/ folder or preferred save location.

If you haven't created one before, follow the steps from the Create a Sandbox Folder page in the Introduction to Palantir Foundry tutorial to create it now.
