Sustainment

As a joint warfighting function, Sustainment extends operational reach, prolongs tactical endurance, and ensures strategic freedom of action for the Joint Logistics Enterprise through the provision of its four elements:

  • Logistics: Defined by the planning, execution, movement, and continued support of materiel and personnel from the Strategic Support Area to an operational or tactical point of need, logisticians ensure warfighters have what they need to conduct their missions.
  • Financial Management: Encompassing all planning, programming, budgeting, and execution activities performed in support of military operations, the Services' financial managers also oversee personnel pay and perform audits which ensure appropriate financial resource utilization.
  • Health Service Support: From preventive medicine to medical logistics, the Health Service Support element of Sustainment ensures the medical readiness and care of military personnel.
  • Personnel Services: Through legal, religious, morale, and traditional human resources support, the Personnel Services element of Sustainment enhances military personnel welfare and readiness.

Sustainment interfaces in the Defense Ontology

Designed to represent materiel, their classifications, requirements, and status changes within a defense context, Sustainment's interfaces serve as the primary entity types in its ontology. Interface link type constraints define the object-to-object relationship across object types that implement a Sustainment interface.
